When I Bake a cake from a box, Pillsbury is at the bottom of my list because although it is cheaper than the Duncan Hinez and Betty Crocker batch, it's also lower quality. The cake is usually tough and dry and the taste can't be compared. When I bought this box of brownie mix I figured I'd get
exactly what I paid for just like with the cake mix, but I was honestly surprised! Yes, its not the same quality as the other brands and yes, on its own it can use some improvement, but it's nothing that a little topping can't make up for and after all, at around a buck a box you really can't ask for much.
The sweetness is just right, not too much and not too little, it's not as rich as others, but it's rich enough to satisfy and the texture is a little less chewy than desired, It's more like an in-between cake and brownie, but if you do as I did and add some walnuts, chocolate pieces, a little fudge and a little enthusiasm, you should be fine. I also let it cook about 10 minutes more than the box required because it was not entirely ready and because the edges are so good when they get crispy. This last part depends entirely on your oven and how it works though.
This is basically an ok brownie mix, better if you're creative and want to spruce it up with some extras or have kids that would love to try their own creations. For the price it's not bad at all. However, if you want to impress don't be cheap, get yourself the better brand or make your own. This is not a mix to be serving at your dinner party, it's more for a family treat or for the kids.
Picture is my own creation, The Pillsbury 13x9 Family Size Dark Chocolate Brownie Mix, chopped walnuts (inside the brownie as well as on top), Fudge and Ghirardelli dark chocolate and white chocolate pieces, crumbled and spread on top.
